Home » About Us

SHAC is a registered Housing Association and charity, operating in Northern Ireland.   It originated in 1977 as the Student’s Housing Association Co-operative Ltd with the aim of providing accommodation for mainly students and single people.  Over the years however, our services have expanded and developed and we now strive to satisfy a wide range of general housing needs, not only for singles but also for couples and families, with our experience and commitment.

We operate under legislation contained mainly in the various Northern Ireland Housing Orders but are also subject to detailed guidance, regulation and audit by the Department for Social Development (DSD) Northern Ireland with whom we are registered.  We are also subject to the Equality provisions of Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998.

Our housing stock is concentrated in the greater Belfast area  - which extends to Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus;  the Coleraine /Portstewart/Portrush Triangle and Derry City.   Our Head Office is located in Central Belfast and there is an Area Management Office in Derry serving the needs of our clients living there and in the general Coleraine/North Antrim area.

The Association offers accommodation under public sector tenancies which may be Secure, Short-hold or (predominantly) shared non-secure.  We offer two main categories of accommodation; Shared and Self Contained,  suitable for the needs of a wide range of clientele.

In June 2011 SHAC Housing Association became an independent member organisation of the Oaklee Homes Group and this will not only  prepare  us for the business challenges which lie ahead, but will also offer new additional opportunities to enhance our service provision, to operate more efficiently and to  embrace new partnerships.

As a registered charity SHAC is a not-for-profit organisation, which means that we use any financial surplus to improve or expand our services and to build more homes.

A Board of Governors whose members serve on a voluntary basis is responsible for how the association operates. A Chief Executive is responsible to the Board for ensuring that its decisions and policies are carried out as intended.
